Product decisions
Mobile app or web application: how to choose
Start with the task and the context in which it happens. The best platform choice is the one that supports your users and operating constraints, rather than the one with the longest feature list.
Consider how people reach the product
A public website can be opened from a link without an app installation. That makes it useful for discovery, occasional tasks, and information that needs to be searchable. An installed application can suit repeated use, but people need a reason to download it and keep it.
List the device capabilities you need
Camera access, location, notifications, Bluetooth, and background tasks may influence the choice. Support varies by browser, operating system, and permission settings. Build a small technical check for critical capabilities on the actual target devices before committing to an approach.
Treat offline behavior as a requirement
Offline support is not a single checkbox. Specify what people can read, create, or edit without connectivity, how data synchronizes later, and how conflicting updates are resolved. Both mobile and web approaches require deliberate work here.
Account for distribution and updates
Web changes can be deployed centrally. Mobile distribution introduces store requirements, review processes, signing, and users who remain on older versions. Enterprise distribution may have a different operating model. Include these responsibilities in the launch plan.
Compare the total maintenance burden
A shared-code mobile framework can reduce some duplication, but platform-specific testing remains necessary. A responsive web product still needs browser and screen-size testing. Compare ongoing support, integrations, and accessibility alongside initial development effort.
Make the decision with evidence
Choose a web-first experience when link-based access and broad reach dominate. Investigate an installed app when repeated use or device integration is central. If the choice is close, prototype the most uncertain workflow and test it with representative users before funding the full build.
